Humanity

Over the course of my eternal existence, I’ve had the privilege to bear witness to countless astral events. So many in fact, that my recollections of some of them has (inevitably) faded throughout the aeons. Despite my memory’s whimsy, I can presume that by means of my books, I hold billions of recollections… mucho more than anyone could be able to remember by themselves.

However, certain events endure vividly in my consciousness due to their sheer beauty; so breathtaking in fact, that I found myself lacking words— even in the thousand tongues I have mastered—, to adequately describe the awe I experienced on such events. Others are etched into my memory because of their grandeur, duration, or scale. And a select few are indelibly carved in my mind out of their unmitigated dread, recalling them still send shivers down my immortal spine; these few have made me wish not to have the solemn responsibility of recording and documenting them.

Amongst all these celestial spectacles of beauty and terror, there is none so awe-inspiring as the birth of a world where, with the inexorable passage of a few thousand years, life emerges and sprouts in all its myriad forms, spanning a diverse and. ever-changing kaleidoscope of shapes, colors, patterns, and sizes. The creation of life, in any fashion, is a joyous circumstance, as it can follow arrangements woven by divine wish and whim.

Even better, when enriched with volition, life is able to shape itself into unsuspected (or unplanned) forms that marvel even the most skeptic of minds.

Throughout the multiverse, these “whims” have taken humanoid form on several occasions. I deduce that such beings hold a special place in the heart of deities… I call humanity a “divine favorite”  To me, humanoids appear to be quite similar amongst themselves; but it seems that their minor differences are significant enough to necessitate distinctions and —ludicrous— naming conventions: humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, halflings, alushi and many more. For the sake of brevity and practicality, I shall henceforth refer to the divine favorites as “humanity”.

Divine grace has endowed this lesser, mortal beings with an array of unparalleled gifts: they’ve been granted intelligence, which empowers and helps them to understand their surroundings and circumstances, enabling the to react in proportion to the environmental consequences of their actions; they’ve also been gifted with the ability to harness magic, to tap into the Arcane Twine, bend the elements, transform matter, and draw ethereal energy; last but not least, they’ve been given the ability to experience heightened emotions and sensations… yes, humanoids have at their disposal a range of feelings second only to the god themselves. However endowed with such an allowance, they still stand largely ignorant to the interpretation and control of the urges these feelings arise. These gifts bestowed humanity two godlike capabilities: the power to create and destroy at will, making them both wondrously beautiful and harrowingly calamitous.

I must admit to a certain amount of envy and curiosity; at times, divine rationale and reasoning escape my grasp. The question of why such gifts where given out to mortals remains one of the main enigmas I have yet to unravel in full. Progress is being made, I assure you.

This record should not be misinterpreted, I do not challenge divine judgement. Even I, who must maintain objectivity and detachment from the beings I am tasked to observe and monitor, have indulged into fondness for affairs in which humanity is concerned. Indeed, these intelligent, passionate, recalcitrant, beautiful beings consistently make the annals of history… intriguing.
