The Vigil

After the cataclysmic series of events that Death’s Birth brought to Irëdeule, the people of The Vigil sought to play an active and benevolent role in the planet’s history. Despite their relatively small numbers compared to other emerging, soon-to-be nations, they aspired to create a society based on the principle of harmony. So, with the unassembled Light Gazer in tow, they journeyed south, crossed Qarantha’s Scar, and ventured deep into the lush, vibrant, and mysterious Kyaral Forest. There, amid the lush anchor trees, they established Graan Aux Kyaral.

After setting the foundations of their new home, the mages who joined Algar Frytae when the Do’Gant Eldership was dissolved took on the mission of expanding the Light Gazer’s capabilities. Algar envisioned an active instrument, monitoring was not enough in an age plagued by war. Although the task at hand was difficult, the circumstances demanded efficiency: the large number of portals that appeared during the expanding conflict between the Sil’Kin and the Tel’Jae and the indiscriminate use both parties where giving to portals created a communal sense of urgency. The Vigil knew that to protect the innocent, and act assertively against the tides of war, sluggishness could not be afforded.

Success did not come until a decade after the warring armies’ arrival, and even though innumerable lives had been lost up to that point, The Vigil rejoiced— the Light Gazer was enhanced and evolved into a formidable arcane apparatus capable of scrutinizing, protecting, moving, forcibly hatching, or destroying a single egg every day. Powered by a faulty Kuydir found in a cavern surfaced during Death’s Birth, the new powerful machine enabled Algar’s people to play a substantial role during the Arrival Wars, without needing to engage in combat and without a full-fledged army.

The Vigil’s main goal became to analyze eggs, move them to the safety of Graan Aux Kyaral (at least with the content was of humanoid origin), and offer newcomers the choice to stay within the city— assigning them a purposeful job— or to leave the city and enter Drott’na as a free citizen. Most stayed, giving rise to the bustling cities that currently pepper the subcontinent of Mittalmar.

After the conflict, The Vigil chose to seal the entrance to The Light Gazer, preventing its potential weaponization.

Shortly before his death, Algar Frytae created the Kyaral Fete, an annual festival event filled with dazzling rides, scrumptious food, quenching ale, and carnival games. It also hosts the Token of History tournament, where warriors and adventurers compete for fame, gold, and the opportunity to have their names engraved on the Token Wall, a memorial structure that commemorates the world’s greatest and mightiest heroes. The festival serves various additional purposes, including providing a platform for diplomatic encounters, business meetings, and presentations of the Apsects of Civka, Irtramelle, Drendaer, Zillain, and Thandalm, who regularly attend to the celebrations, albeit under different identities.

The Vigil is currently governed as a democracy, led by a leader who strongly values peace and who firmly upholds rigorous and unchanging order. His doctrine creates an aura of true neutrality heavily tinged with insurmountable prejudice— while followers of other nations are always welcome in Graan Aux Kyaral, their political strifes are not to be listened, nor tolerated.

Meanwhile, the once powerful Light Gazer rests within the Oculus Spire, tightly guarded by arcane runes, adamantine doors, and loyal soldiers. Despite The Vigil’s policy of unfettered access to the contraption, red tape and bureaucratic hurdles hint at another type of guideline.

Goals

The fundamental goal of The Vigil is to maintain a position complete and utter impartiality in all matters involving Cyriedon’s states and organizations. The geographical separation of their main townships— located in the subcontinent of Mittalmar between Drott’na and Thevenek and surrounded by the violent waters of Qarantha’s Scar— substantially enhances their strategy.

This neutrality has allowed the two rulers of Graan Aux Kyaral to occupy a seat at the highest tables in Cyriedon as moderators and arbiters. This roles have given the Vigil both ideological independence and, at times, a misled and arrogant sense of being the ultimate arbiters of the world’s affaris.

Finally, The Vigil retains the Light Gazer’s protection as its greatest and utmost priority; considering the tower and its machinery assembly, as the most dangerous object on Cyriedon.

Factions

Calaventë Hen

Calaventë Hen, roughly translated as The Sun’s Eye, are The Oculus Spire’s designated guard and protectors. Comprised of a diverse range of civilians, Calaventë Hen operates independently and does not rely on anyone within Graan Aux Kyaral to complete its mission. Skilled builders, hunters, alchemists, and artisans have collaborated to create a great (and nightmarish) gauntlet for anyone attempting to enter the tower or reach the Light Gazer.

Members of the Hen consider themselves descendants of the original Witnesses, and to honor their ancestors, they all use their respective talents and abilities to weave a complicated and inscrutable network of misinformation that aids in the protection of the great tower. This strong sense of belonging and unity, albeit at times misdirected, complements the modern Witnesses’ intelligence work.

As a result, a group seeking information on the Oculus Spire at a Jin Con El tavern will never know if the information supplied by the flirtatious barmaid over ale is real or part of the fabricated narrative crafter by the Hen’s writer’s guild— but such is the world of these unified craftsmen, where those who control access to information, also control the course of events.

The Witnesses

The Witnesses, the Light Gazer’s true guards and a select cadre of battlemages armed with formidable Fey weapons, spend the majority of their lives stationed at Radiant Obelisks, small defense towers purposefully located around the Oculus Spire, at several key vantage points in Mittalmar. From these strongholds, these protectors can weave and unleash potent spells at targets located miles away. Their primary mission is to safeguard both the integrity and isolation of the central spire, and the expanse of their home from any potential adversary.

While the term “The Witnesses” is sometimes used loosely to refer to anyone within The Vigil’s territory, these few wizard guardians are unmistakable when spotted in public— a Witness is always crowned by a simple and elegant floating platinum circlet, and covered by a kaleidoscopic shoulder cape; items which set them apart while drawing awed stares and excites whispers. These uniforms, combined with the the enthralling aura their bodies pulse distinguish a genuine Witness from the eventual charlatan.

Amidst the people of the Vigil, it is well-known that when trouble looms, a true Witness will be the first and last line of defense.

The Witnesses is almost completely comprised of people with elven blood loyal only to The Vigil’s Premier.

Relations

In Cyriedon, there are few people who don’t have a good friend (or a memorable drinking buddy) within Vigil territory. The Kyaral Fete naturally fosters these friendships by providing opportunities for all sorts of people to attend. It also common for vendors and merchants to acquire valuable business contacts during the event, making it an attractive circumstance for anyone interested in making or spending some gold.

However, at a diplomatic level the situation is more complex, primarily due to The Vigil’s control over the Light Gazer.

Members of the Hexahall Syndicate regularly express that unrestricted and free access to the Light Gazer, and its capabilities, would mean significant advancement (and rekindling) of stagnant portal-related technologies under development by the artificers of Myrtip Heath. The Sil’Kin Guild and the Vixak Protectorate firmly oppose the restrictions placed over the machine; they believe the Gazer may contain the key to understand the creation of the world. And all of them frequently indicate that the Gazer may very well hide the only means to save every soul on the face of Irëdeule from a fate worse than Death’s Birth.

Other groups such as The Nissë Lineage, the Quietus Legacy, the Steelhand Sanctum and Pontille & Co. hold strong historical connections with The Vigil, and show no interest on the Light Gazer, which they believe rests in the most qualified hands.
