The tumultuous and unpredictable oceans of Irëdeule, their wayward currents, veiled depths, and tempestuous waves, all lie under the dominion of Saar, The Estranged Tide, a deity also known as the Waveweaver, and sister to Ren’zar.
Rendered in art as a stooped and withered half-woman-half-seahorse with skin taking on a subtle green hue reminiscent of the sea’s depths, long dark tresses of seaweed-like hair, and an armor fashioned from coral, Saar’s haunting and (mostly) nightmarish image commemorates the essence of the ocean’s otherworldly allure and magnificence. Sailors’ drawings and scribbled notes of the Waveweaver bespeak of her as always accompanied by a school of spectral underwater creatures, riding the waves with her across the aqueous expanse of her domain.
Temples dedicated to Saar stand as coastal sanctuaries, gazebos fashioned in sturdy rock and timber boldly positioned at the terminus of a meandering causeway that extends a full mile out over the ocean; making the very entrances to these places a perilous and treacherous endeavor— a conscious design that ensures that only the steadfastly devout or the truly audacious dare to tread upon them, and an architectural choice that reflect’s Saar’s desire to remain estranged. Needless to say, these causeways remain barred and locked in the absence of a priest, underscoring the caution a visitor should take near these holy locations.
Those who willingly heed the beckoning call to serve under the patronage of the Estranged Tide face the hard choice of residing as guardians of Saar’s shore-line temples, a solitary and dangerous lifestyle; or to become a ship’s chaplain, offering guidance and protection to sailors during their adventures upon the capricious waters of Cyriedon.
Saar has a steep inclination towards solitude and privacy; therefore she eschews the incessant prayers and desires raised to her by mortals; thus she leaves upon her Aspect to heed the calls of Irëdulians and to respond with the volition and agency that the Estranged Tide herself would exercise. Higdale, a triton offers a taciturn conversation, but he never neglects his duties as per Saar’s definition. He lives a fisherman’s life inside The Maw.
